These are just naughty… and a little weird. I love playing around with flavors- especially sweet and savory; this one was such a success- for a palate like mine, at least. While there may be a couple things in this recipe that you don’t usually see when it comes to sweets (cough, black pepper and sour cream, cough, cough), trust me, it works; add some black pepper brown sugar bacon pieces, and you just have yourself a tasty little bite going on.

Ingredients

Brown Butter Cookies

1 ½ cups flour

½ tsp baking powder

¼ tsp salt

1 stick butter

½ cup brown sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

Sour Cream Peppercorn Frosting

1 stick butter, softened

¼ cup sour cream

1 cup powdered sugar

½ cup light brown sugar

1 tsp ground black pepper

Brown Sugar Pepper Bacon

4 strips of bacon

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp black pepper

Directions

Brown Butter Cookies

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 F

Step 2

Mix all dry ingredients together in a medium size mixing bowl

1 ½ cups flour

½ tsp baking powder

¼ tsp salt

Step 3

Melt the stick of butter in a small skillet until it’s brown in color; you know you’re getting close to done when you start seeing foam form on top of the butter- I advise to take the butter on and off the heat, the browning process kind of sneaks up on you. When you smell a strong roasty, nutty aroma and you can see a light caramel color in the butter when you stir it, you have brown butter! Set aside and allow to cool for about 15 minutes.

1 stick butter

Step 4

Mix all wet ingredients in a large mixing bowl

½ cup brown sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

Step 5

When the brown butter is no longer super hot to the touch, stir it into the wet ingredients mixture.

Step 6

Combine the dry mix with the wet mix- mix until a dough forms.

Step 7

scoop the dough on to an un-greased sheet pan, press down on the dough to flatten just a little bit (or more if you don’t like thick cookies), and bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Allow to fully cook before spreading the frosting on top.

Sour Cream Peppercorn Frosting

Step 1

Soften the butter in a microwave for about 10 seconds, or allow to sit out on your counter for at least an hour / until it’s soft.

Step 2

Mix all ingredients together, and spread on to the cookies when they have fully cooled. Store extra in the fridge.

1 stick butter, softened

¼ cup sour cream

1 cup powdered sugar

½ cup light brown sugar

1 tsp ground black pepper

Brown Sugar Pepper Bacon

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375 F

Step 2

Place the bacon strips on to a sheet pan. Mix the brown sugar and pepper together, and sprinkle on to both sides of the bacon.

4 strips of bacon

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp black pepper

Step 3

Bake in the oven until crispy- for about 15 minutes- and place in a storage container lined with paper towel.

Step 4

Break into smaller pieces, and add as a garnish for the cookies.
