I stuffed this with dulce de leche, but you can use Nutella, chocolate, or any jam/preserves. Traditionally is plain with no filling. There is also a version where it’s brushed with egg wash and topped with sesame seeds before baking it. 

Pan de Muerto

In a container, mix all the ingredients for the sponge and mix until the yeast dissolves; cover with plastic and let it double the size. 

One stick (6 tbsp  1/4 cup) soft margarine (room temperature)

In a bowl, mix all the ingredients for the bread and add the yeast mixture. Knead it until it is not sticky; this might take up to 20 minutes; if you have a tiny mixer, then use it and save you some work, but by hand, you will make the best dough and so fluffy when it bakes. 

Separate the dough into five equal parts, then round up 4 of them; press each ball, spread Dulce de leche or any other filling, seal it, fold it, and round up again. Skip the filling if you want. Cut the 5th part into four pieces and roll each into a long strip; cut a little bit off and then cut it into two strips; roll each strip with three fingers to for the bones, place them cross on top and press, then make a ball with the little piece and place on the top center. 

Place them in a sheet pan with parchment, cover them with plastic, and let them rise about half the size. Uncover and bake it at 350 for 15-18 minutes. 

Brush each bread with melted butter and coat with white sugar.
